Ronde van Vlaandren, Stijn Coninx, Tour of Flanders March 18th, 2008
I’ve received several links to this 2 minute preview of the new film about the Ronde van Vlaanderen directed by Stijn Coninx. Each time I watch it I’m awash with emotion as it perfectly elucidates why cycling is closer to a culture, a religion even, than a sport in this area of the world.
Simply stunning.
Holy week beckons! God is Terug!

Very nice. I am a triathlete but I can relate. No words but what an awesome short. Good call.

now is the time to edit….please
I can’t fit another in my tummy.
Heal up and take care…..stay focused and this happens to us all – ok!
No worries it’s bike racing.
Focus on what’s next in line…….it’s the details…..and the quality/quantity of beer per boow booow…..they are ‘natural tattoos’ as I like to call them:)

Nice work with ‘elucidate’, Liz.

Yo Liz, you’re blog is kinda cool, but could you please do something about the juke box widget thing? It plays way too friggin’ loud.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that you got into the tourney. In the first round you’re up against Cindy Lakatosh. Rochelle Gilmore (who the early responders seem to regard as the favorite to win it) is also in your bracket. I’m not a betting man, but I’m thinking that if you make it past Cindy, you’re a shoe-in to get to the semi-finals. Should be good stuff.
Hope you’re doing well on the mend. Crashing always blows…
Thanks,
Burt

Oh damn… that movie is going to make me cry! I loooove that kind of stuff! Can’t wait to see the entire thing. It reminds me a bit of the short film The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse.

Yo, Hoovis,
1) Turn down yer speakers. I like it loud.
2) Gilmore and Lakatosh are both better looking than I am and we haven’t even touched on Mandy LOOOOZANZO! Her hotness makes me sweat. The only way I’ll win is if a crowd of tall forehead, vampire teeth loving freaks converge upon the DoucheBlog page and vote.
But that won’t happen.
So here’s my resignation ahead of time.

Be jealous, Liz.. Cuz I’m gonna ride it the day before… It’s my first time and I’m getting sweaty palms writing about it… I CAN’T WAIT!!! Makes me feel proud to live in this part of the world… Hell yeah!!

It’s the greatest race in the world. I actually feel sorry for everyone that gets geeked-up for July – they’ve already missed the best.
Thanks for posting the promo. It’s the best thing I’ve seen in weeks. Gotta find the film when it’s out…

Liz, I thought CycleTo was primarily for and about women racers because there are already so many cycling sites for men? Your initial interview on the site sounded exciting and great for women. There are so many great female racers and up-and-comers that can fill the pages with original interviews, etc. other than Bob reading other sites and posting it on CycleTo. However maybe I misunderstood. It was a great idea though.

Dear Anon,
Bob’s site was never geared specifically to one gender or another. Why must we continue that futile battle?
Consider CycleTo.com a beautiful, funny, bi-sexual bike news site! It loves all cyclists (as long as they have shaved legs) and just wants to find readers that will really listen and check back a couple times a day for new content.
Hope that clears things up for you, Anon.
Ta Ta for now,
Liz

It looks like a good one. The whole feel was kind of like Hell on Wheels minus the uber ego of Zabel plastering the screen.

Did the amateur ride a couple of years ago in a downpour… what a tremendous, uplifting bike experience that was. The crowds, the riders, the atmosphere is hard to explain to my fellow U.S. riders…and this trailer is giving me the urge to do it again in a couple of weeks!

…in one sense, we’re all so lucky to be born here the usa & canada (pour moi), simply because we have so much space & natural beauty around us…
… but as cyclists w/ serious bike joneses, it seems like we all missed the bus, when you see a movie like that where cycling is so much an intrinsic part of the daily culture…
…damn…

I’m sorry to be a doof, but what does “terug” mean?? I tried an online translator and it choked..maybe it’s one of those Flemish words that has no Dutch equivalent?? Thanks for a terrific blog!

Hi Liz,
I am glad that you like/liked the “ronde van Vlaanderen”. I live in Belgium and I must say that the movie doesn’t exagirate, it is true, the “ronde” is something special and heroïc.

Dear Liz,
you mention here: God is terug!
this means “God is back!” It refers to the belgian rider Frank Vandenbroucke. His fans used to call him God (and some of them still name him God
the life of Frank VDB is actually an amazing stories of highs and lows: an amazing victorie in Liege-Bastonge-Liege, several stages in the Vuelta d’Espagna versus drug addictions and suicide attempts. He recently wrote a book about is life: it’s titled “Ik ben god niet” (I’m God, not…) If you’re interested I’ll try and translate some passages of the book so you can read them. I’m a big fan of him… but recently I discovered this blog and so from now on, he will have to share me with you!
Kind regards
A new belgian Fan!
