A little trick I stole from Tom, diaper rash ointment to sooth and heal road rash. I took it one step further and started using it in place of chamois cream in a pinch. Seems to work pretty well!
And there you have it.

Boudroex’s Butt Paste. It has a higher concentration of zinc, the key, than any other diaper rash cream out there. Heals over night. Especially saddle sores.

I have never used camois cream, but thought about giving it a try, especially with this summer heat. I am now down to two pairs of riding shorts, one is a cheaper pair of cannondales which are worn out, but comfortable, and one pair of Assos. At first I was glad I spent the big bucks for the Assos, but now I am thinking they are designed by people with no genitals. It is time for tying a different brand of riding shorts… possibly Hencappi. Got any recommendations anyone?

I am a huge fan of diaper rash cream in place of chamois butter! It’s a staple part of my mountain biking attire when I know I’m going to be bouncing all over the seat for any length of time. kudos.

Keith Bontrager chamois cream recipe:
13 oz petroleum jelly
1 oz hydrocortisone cream
1 oz triple anti-biotic ointment
1 oz lanolin oil (such as Lansinoh, found in baby sections of stores)
Stuff is cheap, and rules.

I recently heard that Noxema is a great chamios cream replacement as well.

I started using diaper rash cream as chamois butter too, mainly because we had a few full tubes of Desitin when my youngest moved out of diapers. I am sold on it now too though. Might have to break down and actually buy some more when my left over supply runs out.

Nice shot of you and a team mate in Charlotte on Velonews. Looks like you girls were working really hard. Very intense pace evidently.

Rock salt works the best. It helps exfoliate.

Liz, congrats on making the front page of the Tour of Missouri website. There was no team announcement for the womens’ race; is VK going to be there?

The Assos chamois cream is really great stuff. Probably the only thing that says Assos that I will ever be able to afford.

I love the Diaper Rash Ointment idea in place of chamois butter. Gotta try that system out sometime. Right now I’m using Neutogena ‘fragrance free’ body lotion and it seems to work great for me.
For road rash I’ve found Silvadene Ointment feels a thousand times better and does not burn like bacitracin does. It also helps the skin to heal & fill in faster.
This is a great thread.

I agree with Steve the Assos cream is probably their only affordable item and it does work really well. Even more important than the best cream for the nethers is a great fitting/comfortable chamois itself, unfortunately this isn’t easy to find. I’m thankful to have had fair to excellent luck with the chamois thing over the years.
Good music choices Liz, have you heard Junip (Jose Gonzalez’s full band) or Woven Hand (David Eugene Edwardsof 16 Horsepower)?
Keep the posts coming, many of us raced then collapsed into other less positive ways of living for years only to find our way back to the bike and its always nice to see the evidence of others doing the same.

A 1 lb. jar of A&D ointment is the way to go!
